My group discussed the spinal cord injury of former Ole Miss football player, Chucky Mullins. He sustained a spinal cord injury during a tackle in the Homecoming football game on October 28, 1989. He recieved treatment in Memphis, TN where he was diagnosied with tetraplegia and then moved back to Oxford. His main goal after his injury was to continue his life as a student at Ole Miss. The football team set up a fund to help build Chucky a new home in order to have the access and adaptations he needed at a house.
We discussed what the role of an OT would have in order to help Chucky continue to live a fullfilling life. A few ideas we can up with were to create a few switches that he can use his head, nose or mouth to activate in order to help him communicate. Another role of the OT would be to educate his family and caregivers on how to work on transfers, using his wheelchair or any other new adaptive equipment he may have after this injury. The OT could also play a role in working with the university to make sure that Chucky was able to access the appropriate buildings and classrooms in order to continue as a student at Ole Miss.
